Emergence - carved and painted plaster sculpture of abstracted calla lily
Saturday, September 13, 2003 by Benjamin Bader
Created in late 2003, "Emergence" is the only completely plaster sculpture I've created and managed to photograph. The plaster was cast in a five gallon bucket using newspaper and plastic bags to get the rough shape before carving the final shape using a variety of plaster shaping tools. Once the shaping was finished, the sculpture was sanded with progressively higher grit sandpaper before being sealed and painted to resemble an abstract calla lily. Unfortunately, because of the brittle nature of plaster, the years were not kind to the piece and got damaged severely before being lost during a studio move in 2011.
