Originally designed and built for the 2005 Pirate themed Halloween party at Dublin Pub, this large-scale public sculpture stayed fixed atop the Dayton, Ohio restaurant's roof with an Irish flag in place of the Jolly Roger for a few years until it finally succumbed to exposure to the elements and had to be taken down. The octagonal base was constructed out of plywood and construction grade 2x4s that were spray-painted black to match the building. A complex white Celtic knot then was painstakingly spray painted on the front panel. I had originally planned to add the Celtic knot to the wider side sections, but ran out of time before the crow's nest needed to be installed on the roof. The mast was made using a 10' length of 3" PVC (painted black) with a reducer PVC fitting on top connected to a wooden fence post finial (painted green) to make the ball of the mast. To attach it to the base of the crow's nest, a toilet flange was screwed to the base and rope guy wires were attached around the perimeter with eye screws to compensate for wind gusts. To attach the rope that holds the flag, a pulley was added between the PVC pipe and the reducer fitting on top and another pulley was connected to an eye screw at the base.
